In August Dr. Timothy Coates extended the department’s scholarly reach to Latin America. He lectured at the Universidade Tuiuti in Curitiba, Brazil on “The Punishment of Exile to Luanda, Angola, 1880-1932.”
At the State University of São Paulo at their branch campus in Franca, Brazil he also gave a talk at a conference on “Images of the West During the 16th, 17th and 18th Centuries.” His subject was “Convicts and Orphans, Now Ten Years Later.”
While there he also provided a workshop for graduate students on “Conducting Research in Portuguese Archives and Libraries.” All the foregoing were presented in Portuguese.
