Welcome to the website of Emily S. Beck, Ph.D.

I am an Associate Professor of Hispanic Studies and an Affiliate Faculty Member of the Women and Gender Studies Program at the College of Charleston.

Starting in August 2024, I currently serve as the Associate Chair of the Department of Hispanic Studies.

In May 2016, I co-founded the South Carolina Medievalists Group with Dr. Caroline Dunn, Associate Professor of History at Clemson University. SC Medievalists Group is a professional group of scholars throughout South Carolina whose research and pedagogical interests engage the medieval and premodern eras.

From 2018-2023, I served as the Director of the M.Ed. in Languages, an interdisciplinary program offered through the School of Education and the School of Languages, Cultures, and World Affairs. The program features 2 emphases: SPAN and Multilingual Learners (previously ESOL). The curriculum focuses on the processes of learning and teaching languages, the development of cross-cultural competencies, the most effective strategies and methodologies for teaching languages and world cultures. I also directed the Graduate Certificate in Teaching Multilingual Learners (previously ESOL). This 15-credit graduate certificate program is designed for professionals who work with English language learners here and abroad.
